State Love Pillow
One of the projects I made for the Package Pals swap I signed up for was a 12″ double sided pillow cover. My partner has lived in California and North Carolina and love both states, so I decided to put a picture of each on the two sides of the pillow case in two of her favorite colors.
I love the states with hearts on certain cities that I’ve seen as pillows, posters, and other forms of art work. There’s something I love about how sentimental and simply graphical they are.
I’d include a tutorial, but I basically did the same thing as I did for the octopus pillow I made recently, and I described my general method there (don’t forget to trace your image backwards if orientation matters – just tape the paper upside down onto the window before tracing).
I used ecofelt from JoAnn’s for both the states and the hearts and kona white cotton for the main pillow cover. I machine stitched the states with color-coordinating thread roughly following the state outline and then hand stitched on the hearts with white thread.
I then finished up the opening with an invisible zipper – I love how finished pillows look with these. I used this tutorial – its really simple and if even if it sounds scary, you should give it a try. You can see the whole package I sent and find more information about the swap it was for here. I’ll be posting more in-depth posts about the other two projects I made for it in the next couple weeks

Love this idea, where can I find good outlines for the states?
I just google image searched for the states I wanted. You could try searching for things like ‘California simple’ or ‘California outline’ as well. Good luck!
these are so cute! such a great idea to jazz up pillows!
This is a super cute idea! I love the idea of personalizing it with your state. It would make a great housewarming gift!
Thanks so much for sharing this at the Pinworthy Projects Party last week. I hope to see you there again this Friday.
Super cute idea! I must try it!
